Is it any good?
The film is based on a poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight which was published in the 14th century by the author Gawain Poet the poem also had the same story in which the green knight makes an unexpected visit to the King Arthur’s court. He brings a challenge along with him for the King or anybody who is brave enough to accept the challenge of striking him with his own axe, but there’s a catch to this he tells them that whoever manages to complete the challenge will receive a blow in return after a year. At first, King Arthur hesitates to make a respond but after being mocked by the green knight for King Arthur’s deadly silence, the King comes forward and accepts the green knight’s challenge by himself.
As the King proceeds to grip his hands on the green knight’s axe his nephew Sir Gawain comes forward and tells the king to let him accept the challenge and kill the green knight, the king agrees with him and lets him do the challenge and in one blow of axe he beheads the knight. But the green knight does not die even after Sir Gawain beheads him, he then picks up his head and before riding away he reminds Sir Gawain that he will receive a blow out from the green knight after a year and then proceeds to leave. After the green knight departs from all other people continue with their party and the statement from the green knight leaves the sir Gawain terrified.
As time passes sir Gawain decides to leave the kingdom to go find the green knight. He prepares himself for a tough and long journey ahead of him both mentally and physically. He sets off with a horse and he comes across all kinds of beasts, ghosts, and all other people who try to harm him on his way to the green knight. Sir Gawain manages to find a castle shining in the distance. The lord of the castle welcomes him warmly and gives him a place to stay with a catch men will go hunting every day and when they return they will exchange their winnings with anything sir Gawain has managed to collect by staying in the castle, sir Gawain agrees and returns to his head. After a few days wait, sir Gawain resumes his journey to find the green knight after he passes the forest he finds a kind of split on a rock. He then proceeds to hear the whirring of the grindstone, which confirms that this weird place is indeed the green chapel.
Gawain then goes forward and calls out the green knight and the green knight greets him to his chapel and as per the contract sir Gawain gives his neck to the green knight, the green knight then proceeds to give him two blows and on the third blow he nicks his neck, drawing blood sir Gawain shout that their contract has been met and his challenge is fulfilled but the green knight laughs and tells him that he was the lord the castle he was greeted in and stayed. But at last Gawain manages to prove himself worthy in the eyes of King Arthur and his family. Relieved to be alive he wears a strap on his arm to remind him of his failure and returns back to King Arthur where all the knights wear the strap to show their support and join Sir Gawain.
The Green Knight Has a diverse and impressive cast in the lead role we have Sir Gawain who is played by Dev Patel. The green knight also includes Alicia Vikander, who plays the role of Lady / Esel, Joel Edgerton as Lord, Barry Keoghan as Scavenger, Ralph Ineson as the green knight, Sean Harris as King Arthur, Kate Dickie as Queen Guinevere, Erin Kellyman as Winfred, and Sarita Choudhury as Mother.
Though the Green Knight retains an advantage throughout the story, the experience he provides to sir Gawain is quite positive than negative. Sir Gawain’s experience with the Green Knight throughout the story helps to shape him, who knows what sir Gawain would be if he hasn’t stood up against the Green Knight. The poet leaves the story unexplained and the mysteries unresolved.
