What’s the story?

A hit miniseries of Netflix, i.e., “When They See Us” based on true crime! It is a real-life story of injustice on five youths. They had been found as wrong suspects of an investigation of the case of raped and brutally beaten young female banker. Netflix, on 25th June 2019, confirmed that within the first month of its release, the miniseries was watched by over 23 million viewers. Till now the TV series has won 9 different awards on different categories with more than 30 nominations! Also, the series has gone through many controversies. If you do like to watch TV shows based on social issues and crimes, then you will not regret watching it!

It is a miniseries on the wrongful incarcerations against the accused boys from their perspectives. From makers, a web-based TV show that reveals something that was not published ever during their convictions and trails!

On May 31, 2019, it was premiered in four episodes. The total running time of the complete series is about 64-88 minutes. It was produced by Harpo Films, ARRAY, Tribeca Productions, and Participant Media.

The teaser of the series as released on first March 2019. On the same day an official announcement of the re-titled “When They See Us” from “Central Park Five (announced on sixth July 2017)” was done by DuVernay.

Currently, on IMDB it has got a rating of 8.9 out of 10 from more than 70k voters. It is available to download on Netflix so that you can watch it offline. It is released with Dolby Digital audio encoding and 16:9 4K UHDTV picture format of high dynamic range.

The plot of this Netflix TV show is based on the 1989’s case of Central Park Jogger! It depicts the families and lives of five young males, and those were suspected of first falsely charged and further prosecuted. They were accused of assault and rape of a woman in the same-named park in New York City.

The five male protagonists or accused juveniles by their respective juries were grouped into two by the prosecutor. Four of them were rape convicts, and all the youths were convicted for different charges.

Marquis Rodriguez plays the role as Raymond Santana, Jharrel Jerome as Korey Wise, Ethan Herisse as Yusef Salaam, Caleel Harris as Antron McCray, and Asante Blackk as Kevin Richardson.

Among all the convicted juveniles, Korey, who was just 16 years old during the crime and assumed as an adult as per the legal system. He was forwarded to an adult prison with adult facilities.

Rest all four were sentenced to maximum terms as per the juvenile act. Later, in 2003, they filed suit for wrongful conviction against the city and finally in 2014 they had been awarded a settlement.

Is it any good?

For Netflix, this American TV drama is directed and co-written by Ava DuVernay. The series is featuring a big list of the cast like Kylie Bunbury, Aunjanue Ellis, Felicity Huffman, Vera Farmiga, Joshua Jackson, Michael K. Williams, Asante Blackk, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Niecy Nash, John Leguizamo, Blair Underwood, Logan Marshall-Green, Jovan Adepo, and Jharrel Jerome. The large casting and their performances received acclamations as well.

The filming of this web miniseries has been shot on Madison Avenue, located at the Manhattan’s East Harlem area, and the New York City of New York. As per its critical acclamation is concerned, it has got more than 8 out of 10 as the average rating and 95% approved by 57 different reviews. The series has scored an average of 87/100 on Metacritic as per 23 various critics and indicated as ‘universally acclaimed’.

It has got 11 nominations in the 71st ceremony of Primetime Emmy Awards. In the category of Outstanding Lead Actor, Jerome has been awarded the remarkable acting. The movie is also nominated in the category of Outstanding Limited Series and won the TV award of Critics Choice as Best Limited Series.

When They See Us 1

On June 12, 2019, a companion special of the series was premiered including the exonerated five, creator, and the cast was interviewed. It was titled as ‘Oprah Winfrey Presents When They See Us Now’ and presented on Oprah Winfrey Network and Netflix.

On that day, in the evening a group of 30 teenagers were hanging out together I the New York’s Central Park. Among them, few were causing trouble to others in the park-like harassing homeless people or badly hurting someone.

A white woman named Trisha Meili was of 28 years old was jogging in that park, and later found severely beaten and raped there. She was in a coma for about 12 days, and the whole city was disturbed by this incident.

Further, the five young ones in between 14-16 years of age were found guilty and jailed,  but they never admitted to having done this crime. These five Hispanic and black men are known to be Central Park Five!

In 2018, an interview of the real assailant named Matias Reyes (role played by Reece Noi) was publicly released. It has been taken at Auburn Hills prison where he is there from 2002. He is currently at New York WallKill’s Shawangunk Correctional Facility on his life sentence due to convictions of about three different charges. He can get parole in December 2022!

Recently on March, 20, Linda Fairstein, an American attorney and author, had filed a suit against Netflix, Locke and DuVernay. It was for defamation on her portrayal of this popular miniseries based on the case for which she was the prosecutor in reality. Netflix finally won the case in its favor!!!

Conclusion

The miniseries has a layer of humanity, making its viewers reconsider the reality behind getting justice in America.

As per Ava, the title of the miniseries is based on a question to the audience, what they see when they observe black boys! It challenges people to re-interrogate everyone who was said as criminals. He said, his goal is to humanize boys who were regarded as criminals widely.
