What Is The Best Order To Watch DC Movies?

November 17, 2020

In the movie and comic world exists a wide selection of interesting characters – including the DC comic movies. Yet, for most movies, you want to master the order in which you watch them so you can fully immerse in the story and appreciate it. Similarly, you want to master the order in which you watch DC movies. So, below, we’ve compiled the best order to watch DC movies to make the experience more enjoyable and comprehensible for you.

Best Order To Watch DC Movies

It is easy to identify and watch DC movies in order. After all, you can simply watch them chronologically by following the release dates – from earliest to latest. Whilst characters vary in some movies, each movie builds up your understanding to help comprehend and appreciate the next one.

Man of Steel (2013)

It is difficult to come across anyone who doesn’t know who Superman is. Nevertheless, Man of Steel retells the story of Superman for the first time – in this modern era. The movie accounts for his arrival to earth from Krypton, his adoption by a compassionate couple in Kansas, and his very first encounter with a villainous figure, General Zod.

The best part about this movie is its star-studded performance which includes Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, and Michael Shannon – who deliver exceptionally convincing portrayals of their respective characters.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

A sequel to the Man of Steel, in the DC timeline, Dawn of Justice lays the groundwork for Justice League. Yet, this is not to say that it doesn’t hold its fair share of drama, action, and emotion.  The movie doesn’t only expand the universe into a DC Trinity but brings together a much anticipated appearance of Batman and Superman in the same movie – but not in the best possible ending for Superman fans.

Convinced that Superman is a threat to humanity, Batman embarks on a mission to capture and destroy him. Whilst we are left at the edge of our seats with every Batman and Superman encounter, we are also introduced to other key DC characters such as Wonder Woman – portrayed by the beautiful Gal Gadot.

Suicide Squad (2016)

While it introduces us to one of Joker, Batman’s arch enemy’s many sick and twisted innuendos; Suicide Squad still manages to deliver an underrated, not so typical, superhero performance. You will encounter wit, comedy, twisted ambitiousness, innovative weaponry, and even masterful fighting moves – all in one movie.

The movie also brings together some of the best names in Hollywood – Viola Davis as a calculating strategist, Amanda Waller, who puts together a team of the worst criminals that include Will Smith as Dead Shot, to mention a few – on a suicide mission around the world. The movie focuses on the squad’s unconventional ways as they hunt for and stop the Joker and his crazed associate, Harley Quinn.

Wonder Woman (2017)

This prequel to Wonder woman takes us back on a retro journey to the First World War where the story first began.  This fact has been hinted at in the Dawn of Justice – further confirmation as to why you should watch the DC movies in order. In this DC timeline, the movie explores Diana AKA Wonder Woman’s childhood amongst fellow Amazonians on the beautiful island of Themyscira.

Furthermore, the movie depicts how WWI US fighter pilot Steve Trevor, portrayed by Chris Pine, crash lands near the island, how he comes to meet the tribe, and how he teams up with Wonder Woman to finally defeat longtime rival Ares, the God of War.

Justice League (2017)

The Justice League is the epitome of DC movies in order of chronology as it first showcases our favorite characters together. United, in this movie you will see Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg team up to fight a supervillain, an extraterrestrial being known as Steppenwolf, who is on a mission to destroy the Earth.

Aquaman (2018)

The Aquaman movie succeeds the events of the Justice League movie whilst also doubling as a thorough introduction of Aquaman – an ingeniously planned execution similar to that of Wonder Woman. In this movie, the Antaean hero, Aquaman masterfully portrayed by Jason Momoa, follows his journey as he stops his half brother King Orm, played by Patrick Wilson, from attacking the surface world.

He is accompanied by a warrior Princess, Mera, played by Amber Heard, as they are pursued by the vengeful Black Manta played by Yahya Mateen.

Shazam! (2019)

A less popular, nevertheless, important story in the DC timeline, Shazam! similarly follows the story of the main character. The movie covers the story of an orphan Billy Batson and how he has incredible powers bestowed on him by an ancient wizard to help rescue mankind.

Whilst he and his foster brother are naively indulged in testing out the newfound powers that transform him into a stronger, adult alter ego, played by Zachary Levi, he finds himself face to face with a villainous mastermind. It is up to him to fight this power-hungry villainous scientist Thaddeus Sivana.

Birds of Prey (2020)

One can call Birds of Prey a sequel to the Suicide Squad as it is appropriately placed in the DC timeline. The movie follows Harley Quinn after freeing herself from the Joker’s grasp. Yet, she finds herself in another form of danger as she is pursued by another psychopathic crime boss Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor.

She pairs herself with three other female badasses, Black Canary, Huntress, and a cop, Renee Montoya, ingeniously played by Jurnee Smollett, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Rosie Perez, respectively. This female-empowering and power-packed movie takes you on an adrenaline yielding adventure that leaves your eyes glued to the screen.

Wonder Woman 84 (2020)

Whilst Wonder Woman 84 is set in the 1980s, it is still relevantly placed in the DC timeline. Sure, it pre-dates Man of Steel, but, you must remember that Wonder woman (2017) covers the story needed to understand this superhero character. In this movie, you will be taken on a ride through one of the many battles that Wonder Woman engages in.

In this 1980’s battle, she fights against Maxwell Lord and Cheetah, a villainess, who equally boasts superhuman strength and flexibility, to make the fight worth the while.  Whilst it doesn’t fully disclose this fact as actually what happens, at least it puts viewers to ease when it comes to the mystery of what happened to Diana’s love interest, US fighter pilot Steve Taylor, played by Chris Pine in previous DC movies.

However, this is not all the thrill you should expect. With cast members such as Kristen Wiig, who plays Cheetah, and even, more interesting characters such as Natasha Rothwell, although, with a smaller role, you should expect not only the thrill but sheer entertainment even with Wonder Woman’s seemingly serious personality.

Conclusion

Similar to other comic movies, don’t expect Wonder woman to be the last to be released before another long wait. Expect to see more very soon from this 7-year modern DC comic franchise. After all, in just a knick of time, between 2021 and 2023, you should expect to see a more entertaining continuation of the DC timeline such as The Suicide Squad 2, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, The Batman, The Flash, Aquaman 2, Shazam2, and Black Adam.

The Suicide Squad 2 continues to cover the misadventures of Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, and their band of villains as they continue to terrorize mankind whilst Zack Snyder’s Justice League is set after the events of the first Justice League, of course. In this sequel, we follow Batman as he has resolved his ill feelings for Superman – kindled by Superman’s selfless act and faith in humanity.

In this movie, we see Batman pair up with Wonder Woman to recruit a team of superheroes – Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash – as they fight a greater threat – but not without paying the price (you have to watch the movie to know exactly what it is). Similar to movies such as Wonder Woman (2017) and Aquaman (2018), The Flash focuses on the superhero’s own life.

Aquaman 2 and Shazam 2 focus on each superhero’s own quest to fight yet another threat in their respective worlds. Black Adam on the other end introduces us to the DC Universe’s supervillain and yet more trouble he is about to cause. As usual, their release dates alone are the best order to watch DC movies.
