Daniel Rand, commonly known as Danny, wields the mystical force of the Iron Fist and is one of the very few Marvel superheroes who have a mystical element added to their powers. He specializes in hand-to-hand combat and is the most skilled martial arts fighter in the world. Although everyone knows who Iron Fist is, thanks to Netflix’s 2017 show, many people do not know the extent of his story and powers. So here are some facts about the mystical Iron Fist and his past.

Origin in Comic Books

The character of Iron Fist was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. He was debuted in the Marvel Premiere #15 in 1974. Later, he starred in his own comics and also appeared in Power Man and Iron Fist with Luke Cage.

In the 1970s, America was engulfed by the Kung Fu craze, and the character of Iron Fist was inspired by the Kung Fu movies which were hitting the theatres at that time.

His Powers

Danny Rand was an expert in martial arts even before he acquired the mystical force of the immortal Iron Fist. So his superpowers are a result of years of hard work and training apart from the supernatural element. He is an excellent fighter who can summon and focus his chi, which enhances his reflexes, strength and speed. His signature move as the Iron Fist is to focus his chi in his fist after which he can punch through anything.

Danny’s chi can also provide him with healing powers, making him impervious to injury. At one point in time, Danny was able to use his chi to cure himself of cancer after he got radiation poisoning during a mission.

His parents’ death

Like most of the other superheroes, Danny Rand was orphaned as a child. But what most people do not know is that Wendell Rand, Danny’s father, was also a martial arts trainee at K’un Lun when he was young and almost became the Iron Fist. Unlike Danny, he denied participating in the final test and returned to Earth where he got married to Danny’s mother. When Danny was 9 years old, Wendell and his wife decided to take him to K’un Lun but Harold Meachum, Wendell’s partner, devised Wendell’s death and he fell off a cliff and his mother was eaten by wolves not late after. Danny survived and was taken under the care of the people of K’un Lun where he trained with the thought of one day avenging his parents.

He was raised in K’un Lun

K’un Lun is one of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven that appear in the Earth’s dimension according to a set cycle. Every 88 years, all the seven cities converge together and have a tournament where the winning city gets to appear on the face of the Earth every 10 years. In such a tournament, K’un Lun won and now its doorway is accessible in the Earth’s dimension every 10 years. The Iron Fist is supposed to be the protector of this ancient city.

After the death of his parents, Danny was found by the people of K’un Lun and was trained for the next 10 years under the apprenticeship of Lei Kung the Thunderer. During this time, Danny trained rigorously and conditioned his hands by thrusting them into tubs of hot sand, gravel and then rock. After 10 years, he earned the position of the next Iron Fist and returned to Earth to avenge his dead parents.

He is not the first Iron Fist

Danny Rand is not the only Iron Fist to ever live but rather he is the 66th Iron Fist in a long lineage of warriors. All the Iron Fists are supposed to be the protectors of K’un Lun and when one of them fails to do so, another one takes his place. Throughout his life, Danny meets some previous Iron Fists including his predecessor, Orson Randall, who succumbed to opium and alcohol. Orson Randall was also the person who inspired Wendell Rand to train for the position of the Iron Fist.

He defeated a dragon to become the Iron Fist

Unlike other superheroes, Danny Rand did not get his powers as a result of an accident or because of his wealth. He trained for 10 years in K’un Lun and earned these powers by undertaking the final test of defeating Shou-Lao the undying. Shou-Lao is an ancient dragon who grants the power of the Iron Fist to anyone who beats her. Danny fought the dragon by pressing his chest against the dragon’s and cutting off its source of life. This event led him to acquire the dragon-shaped scar on his chest. He then reached into the brazier, where the dragon’s heart is kept separated from her body, and took the dragon’s immortal heart to get a part of her powers and acquire the title and powers of the next Iron Fist.

Heroes For Hire

Daniel Rand and Luke Cage first met under difficult circumstances and got into a fight while Danny was trying to protect Misty Knight. When Danny and Misty got to know that Cage was innocent and was trying to exonerate himself of previous charges, they helped Cage clear his name. Even though Danny and Cage have little in common, they soon became the best of friends and joined forces by starting a little company called Heroes For Hire, which offered professional investigation and protection services. However, they were licensed by the state of New York and stayed away from anything illegal.

He is a billionaire

Rand Enterprises is a multi-million dollar company founded by Wendell Rand and Harold Meachum. After Harold devised Wendell’s death, Danny was presumed to be dead and the company fell under the sole ownership of Harold Meachum. When Danny returned to New York to avenge his father’s death, he regained his position as the majority shareholder of the company. However, it is important to note that his wealth played no part in him becoming the Iron Fist.

He was Daredevil for a while

When the police grew suspicious of Matt Murdock for being the Daredevil, they locked him up in prison. Danny came to his rescue and disguised as Daredevil and started crime-fighting to throw the police off the scent. When Murdock was released, he got into a fight with the disguised daredevil but when he realized it was Danny, he asked him to continue for a little while longer.

So, these were some of the interesting facts about Daniel Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist which you probably did not know before.
