What’s the story?

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a direct sequel to the first Maleficent movie.  However, the action picks up 5 years after the first one. The peaceful life that Maleficent now has in the Moors is obviously not going to last for a very long time.

What happens is that Prince Phillip is proposing to Aurora and she is accepting it. But his mother wants to use this wedding for other things. Her focus is to divide the fairies and humans forever. That’s why Aurora and Maleficent will find themselves on the opposite sides of the war and now they need to figure out how to still be a family but actively end up dealing with these war related issues.

Is it any good?

The Maleficent: Mistress of Evil story is very interesting and quite creative. They did a very good job on expanding on the first movie’s lore and the ideas themselves are very nice and fun to use in here. They did a tremendous job when it comes to showing the challenges that Maleficent is dealing with and how having a family feels new to her. Not to mention that she actually ends up being at war with her family which certainly complicates all these things.

That’s a bold decision and something that we did not expect at all for the movie. But it’s different and that’s the type of thing you want to see nowadays. It’s one of the coolest ideas that you can have with a movie like this and you will totally like the nice approach they have with the battles and so on.

The CGI for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is improved quite a bit when compared to the previous movie. And that’s actually great, because the story does benefit from vast locations and beautiful regions. It’s certainly one of those things that continually push the boundaries and make the experience creative and extremely rewarding.

When it comes to the soundtrack, they improved that too. The soundtrack is now a lot more orchestral, it comes with some varied tones and it still fits the game world and the character actions really well. There are some strange sound decisions in the beginning, but you can easily get past that. The epic battle towards the end looks and sounds amazing. They put a lot of hard work into making the game extremely exciting and fun to play while also delivering some rather powerful and simplistic sets of features.

Conclusion

It does take a little bit of time to get into Maleficent: Mistress of Evil if you didn’t see the first one, but it does provide a short recap. So you won’t be fully lost here, which is always a nice thing. And they are very creative and friendly too. They make it easy to enjoy all of this experience while also coming with powerful and fun mechanics to expand the world. It’s not a perfect movie, it still has a few flaws here and there, but it definitely improves on the first one and the story itself is unexpected and fun!
